The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue dedicated to the Ancient Greek god Helios. It stood in the city of Rhodes on the Greek island of Rhodes. The statue was over 30 meters high and was designed by the sculptor Chares of Lindos. It stood for 56 years and has been named one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The statue has been immortalized by many ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and even modern authors and poets. It is a very common symbol in literature and poetry today.

The most common theory says that the statue was raised on top of 15-meter marble pedestals. It was made with the help of iron tie bars, covered with brass plates and filled in with stones. AS a result the statue stood on a height of 30 meters.

Destruction

The statue fell during a major earthquake that occurred in 226 BC. It stood erect for 56 years. The natural disaster destroyed big parts of the city as well. Afraid of a warning made by the Oracle of Delhi the citizens of the island decided not to rebuild the statue. Its remains were still impressive and attracted many visitors with their magnificence. It is believed that after the conquest of the island by Arabic invaders the remains were sold to Jewish trader who told them to Edessa and melted them.
